Supporters group United Reel have paid for a plane to fly over
Saturday’s La Liga clash in a bid to bring their Portuguese favourite
back to Old Trafford
A group of Manchester United fans will launch a campaign to bring
Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford this weekend, writes Rob Dawson
of the Manchester Evening News.
The Portuguese superstar has been touted for a big-money return to
the Red Devils next summer after reportedly growing frustrated at Real
Madrid.
And now supporters group United Reel have paid for a plane to fly
over Los Blancos’ clash with Villarreal on Saturday – carrying the
message ‘Come home Ronaldo’.
The group’s founder Oli Grandidge told the MEN: “We have active
supporters on every continent of the world and we are all united by our
love for Cristiano both as a football player and as a person.
“We won’t stop until we bring Ronaldo home.
“Members from all over the world have donated their own money and
resources to fund a mid game message, flown by plane, in a bid to
demonstrate to Cristiano Ronaldo how much the United faithful still love
and support him.
“With the current uncertainty regarding Cristiano Ronaldo’s future,
UNITED REEL deem it essential that the player, can not only feel but
actually see how much the fans still love him and how proud they are of
his achievements since he left Manchester United.
Ronaldo left United for Real Madrid in 2009 for a world record fee of
£80m and has since won the Spanish league title and the Champions
League at the Bernabeu.
But there has been constant speculation he has grown unhappy this
season after Real Madrid sanctioned Angel Di Maria’s £59.7m move to Old
Trafford in August.
However, the uncertainty hasn’t affected his form on the pitch with the 29-year-old scoring eight goals in his last three games.
He has been heavily linked with a move back to United, and fuelled
the transfer talk earlier this month when he revealed it was his ‘wish’
to return.
It is not the first famous United stunt as last season, a group of
United fans raised £840 to pay for a plane to fly over Old Trafford with
an anti-David Moyes protest.
A plane carrying the message ‘Wrong One – Moyes Out’ flew over the stadium during United’s 4-1 win over Aston Villa in March.'
The latest stunt, which is set to take place during Real Madrid’s
Spanish League clash with Villarreal at Estadio El Madridgal this
weekend, has cost £2,750.
