LASU: Returning students will not pay new tuition fees – SUG

The Lagos State University Students Union on Wednesday said that returning students of the institution are yet to accept the new tuition fee announced by the university’s Governing Council. The union’s President, Mr Nurudeen Yusuf, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos said that only 900 newly admitted students for the 2013/2014 academic session had paid the fee. The authorities of LASU had on June 23 said that more than 900 students had paid the tuition after releasing a breakdown of the new tuition fee sequel to the June 11 reduction. The reduction in percentages was between 34 per cent and 60 per cent. The reduction was directed by the state government. Mr. Yusuf said if the returning students accepted the new fees; the total number of students who would have paid would be more than 2,000. “We are about 8,000 students in LASU; the 2013/2014 newly admitted students are 1,014, which means only 900 could afford to pay before their matriculation. “If the management claims that over 900 students have paid, it is the newly admitted students and definitely not the returning students,” he said. The union leader said that the students would continue to defend their position on the fee. The students are insisting that the fee should be reduced to N46, 500 for returning students, while fresh students should pay N65, 500. The tuition fee was increased from N25, 000 in 2011 to N198, 000 for humanities and education, while medical students paid N350, 000.
