20,000 sign petition after referee Peter O’Leary is spotted ‘celebrating’ Nigeria’s win over Bosnia

An online petition to remove referee Peter O’Leary from the 2014 World Cup, has received more than 20,000 signatures already, after a photograph of him apparently ‘celebrating’ with Nigeria goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama was published.

O’Leary wrongly ruled out Edin Dzeko’s goal for offside after 21 minutes and eight minutes later, Osaze Odemwingie scored what proved to be the winner, after Emmanuel Emenike appeared to brush Emir Spahic aside in the build-up.

A Bosnian fan has now called on FIFA to banish the New Zealand official from the World Cup and change the scores to 1-1.

This comes from Dzeko blasted the referee’s performance, describing it as “shameful”.

When asked what happened in the game he said: “The referee happened. We are going home, we are sad because of that, but the referee should go home too, because he changed the result, he changed the game, and that’s why we lost.

“We tried to come back after the goal where there was obviously a foul on our captain and before when I scored a goal it was not offside. Nigeria played good as well, but the referee was shameful for this competition.”
